About the A train

The A is the IND 8th Avenue express and one of the longest single-train routes in NYC. It runs from Inwood-207th Street in upper Manhattan down through midtown and lower Manhattan, into Brooklyn, all the way out to Far Rockaway-Mott Avenue or Lefferts Boulevard.

The A is the primary line for Inwood, Washington Heights, much of the Upper West Side, Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy and Bushwick (via the A's branch to Ozone Park), and the entire Rockaway peninsula. The Rockaway service is the longest stretch in the system — about 90 minutes end to end.

Express service in Manhattan (skipping local stops north of 59th Street) makes the A the fastest way to reach Midtown from Upper Manhattan. The A and C share track from 168th Street south, with the A running express and the C running local.
