About the G train

The G is famously the only NYC subway that doesn't go to Manhattan. It runs from Court Square in Long Island City through Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Clinton Hill, Park Slope, and into south Brooklyn at Church Avenue.

Because it bypasses Manhattan, the G is the connector line for Brooklyn-to-Queens trips without a Manhattan transfer. It's also infamously short — historically only four-car consists ran on the line, half the length of most other trains, which made overcrowding and platform-position guessing a permanent rider sport.

Recent rolling stock upgrades have lengthened G trains in some configurations, but the line still suffers from the structural problems documented in our 'why is the G always late' guide: single-track segments, no Manhattan crossover for crew swaps, and shared tracks with the F at busy points.

Common questions about the G train

Why doesn't the G train go to Manhattan?

It's the IND Crosstown line — built as a connector between Queens and Brooklyn rather than a Manhattan-bound trunk. The G is the only NYC subway line that doesn't enter Manhattan.

Is the G train always late?

It's structurally less reliable than most other lines for reasons covered in detail in our guide. Short trains, single-track segments in spots, and shared tracks with the F create cascading delays.

How do I get from Greenpoint to Manhattan?

Take the G one stop to Nassau Avenue, transfer to the L (Lorimer Street is the transfer); the L runs into Manhattan via 14th Street. Or take the G to Court Square in LIC and transfer to the 7 or E.
