About the C train

The C is the IND 8th Avenue local, sharing track with the A from 168th Street in upper Manhattan down through lower Manhattan and into Brooklyn (Bed-Stuy, Ocean Hill, East New York), terminating at Euclid Avenue.

Because the C is local, it's slower than the A on shared track but stops at every station — useful if your stop is between the A's express stops. Service hours are reduced compared to most lines (no overnight service in some configurations; check live status).

The C uses some of the oldest rolling stock in the system — the iconic R32 cars ran on the C until their 2020 retirement, and current trains are still older than most other lines'. It's a notable detail more than a practical concern: the trains run, just less polished.

Service is reduced overnight; check the live alerts above. The A covers most of the C's stops at night and runs through.

What's the difference between the A and C trains?

Same trunk (IND 8th Avenue) in Manhattan and shared Brooklyn segments. The A runs express; the C runs local. The A goes further (Rockaway/Lefferts); the C terminates at Euclid Avenue.
