In February 1935, Lithuanian-born writer Max Gordon opened the Village Vanguard inside a wedge-shaped basement at 178 Seventh Avenue South that had previously been a speakeasy. Nearly a century later, as you walk down those same fourteen steep wooden steps beneath the red canvas awning, almost nothing inside the room has changed.
Shaped like a slice of pie with the bandstand wedged into the narrow apex, the Vanguard possesses acoustics that sound engineers still marvel at—helped by the low ceiling, heavy red drapes, and decades of framed concert posters absorbing stray reflections. This is the exact room where Sonny Rollins recorded "A Night at the Village Vanguard" in 1957, where Bill Evans taped "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" in 1961, and where John Coltrane pushed modal jazz into the stratosphere.
Every Monday night since February 1966, the sixteen-piece Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (founded by Thad Jones and Mel Lewis) packs the small stage to play blistering big-band arrangements completely unplugged—a sensory experience every New Yorker must witness from a front table at least once.
When the Vanguard’s second set lets out around midnight, cross Seventh Avenue South and walk two minutes west to 183 West 10th Street. Down another tight staircase sits Smalls Jazz Club, founded by former Navy nurse Mitchell Borden in 1994 and now operated as a nonprofit foundation dedicated to supporting working jazz musicians.
Smalls is the beating heart of New York’s late-night jazz ecosystem. After the 7:30 PM and 10:30 PM headlining sets wrap up, the doors stay open for the Midnight Late-Night Jam Session until 2:00 AM or later, when rising Juilliard phenoms and touring veterans walk in with their horn cases to trade solos in a packed, electric cellar.
Best of all, your admission wristband at Smalls also grants you same-night entry right across the street at Mezzrow (163 W 10th St)—an intimate, conversational listening room centered around a seven-foot Steinway Model B grand piano where vocalists and bass-and-piano duos perform inches from the candlelit banquettes.
