About the 1 train
The 1 is the only Manhattan line that runs entirely local — every stop, all the time. It traces the west side of the island from South Ferry up to 242nd Street in the Bronx, hitting the 14th Street, 23rd Street, Times Square, Columbus Circle, and 96th Street stops that anchor the Upper West Side commute.
Because it's local-only, the 1 is the slowest of the IRT West Side lines (the 2 and 3 run express on the same trunk). That trade-off is its main feature: locals know they'll stop at every Upper West Side station, which is the entire point if you actually live there.
Service is generally reliable — the 1 doesn't share track with as many other lines as some, and weeknight ridership is high enough that the MTA prioritizes its uptime. Weekend track work is the usual disruption pattern.

Common questions about the 1 train
Is the 1 train running today?
Check the live status above — pulled directly from the MTA service alerts feed. Anything more than a few hours stale is suspicious; refresh the page if so.
How fast is the 1 train from the Upper West Side to Midtown?
From 86th Street to Times Square (42nd Street) is about 11-13 minutes during off-peak hours. Rush hour can add 5-8 minutes due to crowding and dwell time at stations.
Does the 1 train run 24/7?
Yes. Like all NYC subway lines, the 1 runs 24/7. Service frequency drops overnight (every 20 minutes typical) and weekend track work routinely affects it.
What's the difference between the 1, 2, and 3 trains?
All three share the West Side IRT trunk. The 1 is local — every stop. The 2 and 3 are express trains north of 96th Street (skipping local stops) and continue to Brooklyn via the 7th Avenue line in Manhattan.
