About the 3 train

The 3 is the second IRT West Side express, running from Harlem-148th Street to New Lots Avenue in East Brooklyn. It overlaps heavily with the 2 — same trunk in Manhattan, branching only at the terminals.

For Crown Heights and Brownsville commuters, the 3 is the primary line to Midtown. For Harlem riders it's a faster option than the 1 (which is local) and goes to slightly different stops than the 2.

Weekend service changes are common — the 3 often doesn't run to its full terminus on weekends, with shuttle buses or transfers required north of 148th Street or beyond Utica Avenue. Always check the live status before assuming weekend service.

Common questions about the 3 train

Does the 3 train run on weekends?

Yes, but with frequent service changes. The northern terminus (148th Street) often becomes a shuttle on weekends, and Brooklyn sections may run on alternate routes. Check the live alerts above before traveling.

What's the difference between the 2 and 3 trains?

Both run express on Manhattan's 7th Avenue. The 2 goes to the Bronx and to Flatbush in Brooklyn; the 3 goes to Harlem and to East Brooklyn (Brownsville, New Lots).
