About the 4 train
The 4 is the Lexington Avenue express, the East Side's high-volume backbone. It runs from Woodlawn in the Bronx to Crown Heights-Utica in Brooklyn, with express service through Manhattan's East Side — skipping local stops between 86th and 14th Streets.
Along with the 5, the 4 is the highest-ridership line in the system on a per-track basis. The Lexington Avenue trunk handles about 1.3 million daily riders, and the 4/5 express is how most of them move. Expect packed cars during AM and PM peaks.
Service issues on the Lex tend to be high-impact: a sick passenger at Grand Central or 59th Street routinely creates 20-30 minutes of delay across the entire trunk. The MTA's 2nd Avenue subway (Q line) was built to absorb some of this demand but the Lex is still capacity-bound.

Common questions about the 4 train
Why is the 4 train so crowded?
The Lexington Avenue line (4, 5, 6) is the most crowded subway corridor in NYC by a meaningful margin. The 4 runs express through the densest part of the line's catchment — Upper East Side residents going to Midtown jobs.
Does the 4 train run express on weekends?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Weekend track work on the Lex frequently reroutes the 4 to run local, share track with the 6, or terminate early. Check the live alerts before a weekend trip.
What's the difference between the 4 and 5 trains?
Both run Lexington Avenue express in Manhattan. The 4 terminates at Woodlawn (Bronx) and Crown Heights-Utica (Brooklyn); the 5 terminates at Eastchester-Dyre Av (Bronx) and Flatbush-Brooklyn College on weekdays, with shorter service overnight and weekends.
