About the B train

The B is a weekday-only 6th Avenue express running from 145th Street in Harlem to Brighton Beach in Brooklyn. It skips local stops in Manhattan (express on the IND 6th Avenue line) and runs express south of DeKalb on the Brighton line in Brooklyn.

Because the B is weekday-only, weekend riders need to use the D (which covers most of the same route as a 6th Avenue express but extends further) or the Q for the Brighton portion.

The B's main role is rush-hour capacity — it pairs with the D to run two parallel express services on the 6th Avenue trunk, which on its own would be capacity-bound.

Common questions about the B train

Does the B train run on weekends?

No — weekdays only. Weekend trips use the D (covers most of the same route) or other lines.

What's the difference between the B and D trains?

Both run 6th Avenue express in Manhattan. The D runs 24/7 to Coney Island via the West End line; the B runs weekdays only to Brighton Beach via the Brighton line — the same line the Q uses.
