About the M train
The M is a mostly-weekday line running from Forest Hills in Queens through Brooklyn (Ridgewood, Bushwick), into Manhattan via the Williamsburg Bridge, up 6th Avenue, and back to Forest Hills — forming a U-shape. It runs local on the Queens Boulevard line.
For Ridgewood and parts of Bushwick, the M is the main subway to Manhattan. Service runs weekdays only on the full Manhattan-via-6th-Av route; nights and weekends, the M shuttle runs only between Myrtle Avenue and Metropolitan Avenue in Queens/Brooklyn.
The M was historically a brown-line Nassau Street train; the route was reorganized in 2010 to serve 6th Avenue, which made it meaningfully more useful for Brooklyn commuters and meaningfully less direct for old Nassau-line riders.

Common questions about the M train
Does the M train run on weekends?
Yes, but a limited shuttle version — only between Myrtle Avenue and Metropolitan Avenue. The Manhattan portion is weekday-only.
Is the M train the same as the F?
No, but they share track on parts of Queens Boulevard and the 6th Avenue line. The M is local; the F runs both local and (in Queens) peak-direction express.
