About the W train
The W is a weekday-only Broadway local that runs between Astoria-Ditmars and Whitehall Street-South Ferry in Manhattan. It exists mostly to add capacity during peak hours when N service alone can't handle the Astoria-to-Midtown demand.
Service hours are limited compared to other lines: weekdays only, roughly 6am to 11pm. Nights and weekends, the N covers the W's stops on a local pattern.
For Astoria residents, the W is a small but useful complement to the N — same stops in Manhattan, slightly different headways.
