About the R train

The R is the Broadway local — every stop on the line — from Forest Hills-71st Avenue in Queens through Manhattan and down to Bay Ridge-95th Street in Brooklyn. It's one of the longest local-only routes in the system.

Because the R is local-only, it's slower than the N and Q which both run express in Manhattan. The trade-off is that the R hits stops the express trains skip — 8th Street-NYU, Prince Street, Whitehall — which matters if you live or work near one of them.

The R is also the only train that goes deep into Bay Ridge, making it the primary subway connection for that stretch of southwest Brooklyn. The ride from Bay Ridge to Midtown is one of the longer commutes in NYC at about 50 minutes.

Common questions about the R train

Is the R train slow?

It's local-only, which makes it slower than the express N and Q on the shared Broadway trunk in Manhattan. The trade-off is more stops served — useful if your destination is at one of them.

Does the R train go to Bay Ridge?

Yes — the R terminates at Bay Ridge-95th Street and is the primary subway connection for the neighborhood. The commute to Midtown is about 50 minutes.
