About the Z train

The Z is the peak-direction skip-stop sibling of the J. It runs the same Jamaica-to-Broad-Street route but skips alternate local stops, saving riders 5-8 minutes during peak commutes.

Service is weekday peaks only — eastbound (toward Jamaica) in the morning, westbound (toward Manhattan) in the evening. Outside those windows, only the J runs.

If you commute peak-direction on the Nassau line, the Z is faster than the J. If you commute against the peak or off-peak, only the J is an option.

Common questions about the Z train

When does the Z train run?

Weekday peaks only — peak-direction skip-stop service. Mornings inbound, evenings outbound. Off-peak the J handles all stops.

Is the Z train faster than the J?

Yes — typically 5-8 minutes faster on a Jamaica-to-Manhattan trip because it skips alternate stops. Only useful if your stop is on the Z's pattern.
