About the J train

The J is one of two Nassau Street trains (with the Z) — they run from Jamaica Center-Parsons-Archer in Queens through Brooklyn and across the Williamsburg Bridge into Manhattan, terminating at Broad Street. The route is local 24/7.

The J's catchment in Queens (Jamaica, Richmond Hill, Cypress Hills) and Brooklyn (Bushwick, Bed-Stuy) is large but relatively low-density compared to the Queens Boulevard lines, which makes it less crowded than the F or E.

Service is fairly stable. The J's main quirk is that the Nassau Street terminus (Broad Street) is at the southern edge of Lower Manhattan — useful for FiDi commuters but a transfer away from most of Midtown.

Common questions about the J train

Does the J train run all night?

Yes — 24/7 service.

What's the difference between the J and Z trains?

Same route. The Z is a peak-direction skip-stop service — it skips alternating local stops to save time, while the J stops at all of them. Outside peak, only the J runs.
